Emergency Care Covered Everywhere

Getting Emergency Care

What you need to know about out-of-network emergency care

We all know that medical bills can cause a little stress. Unexpected medical bills can cause a lot of it. We try to avoid them-seek preventive care, live as healthy as possible, set aside extra money when possible. But sometimes they are unavoidable. Medical emergencies happen. As a matter of fact, there are 129.8 million emergency department visits in the United States each year. And every now and then we hear the kind of real-life story that nightmares are made of.

The best things members can do include becoming familiar with healthcare laws, their health insurance benefits, and the measures they can take to minimize out-of-network emergency costs.

Are emergencies always covered?

In an emergency, you should get care from the closes hospital that can help you. That hospital will treat you regardless of whether you have insurance. Your insurance company can't charge you more for getting emergency services at an out-of-network hospital.

The same rule applies to emergency services out of state.

Will Your Health Insurance Cover You Overseas?

For members with medicare, medicaid, or Obama Care there is never coverage abroad. Members should consider a travelers plan.

Commercial insurance will cover abroad for true medical emergencies. Each health carrier will define emergency care differently. Therefor, it is important to check with your carrier their policies before you go.
